SmartEdge 100
Multi-Service Edge Router
Redback Networks Inc., an Ericsson company
that makes video-centric routers for 75 percent of the world’s
largest triple-play networks. The SmartEdge 100 was introduced
in March 2006 and is Redback’s smallest all-in-one router for
data, voice and video services.
The SmartEdge 100 MSER delivers up to 12
Gbps of throughput and supports 8,000 simultaneous users with up
to 16,000 VLANs. The SmartEdge 100 in a compact 2 RU form factor
is designed for smaller networks, remote POPs or central
offices, and multi-tenant or campus environments. It simplifies
triple play networks by combining edge routing, Ethernet
aggregation, and subscriber management.
The SmartEdge 100 enables triple play for smaller network
environments with fewer subscribers or requiring less ports. It
is hardware based and has high performance multicast replication
for IPTV and video on demand. It also is IPv6 ready for advanced
services without any hardware upgrades.
The SmartEdge 100 has advanced QoS to
control bandwidth for each service per subscriber and large
scale IP Video deployments.
“The SmartEdge 100 is an ideal solution for carriers in emerging
markets, as well as for all carriers providing broadband service
to multi-dwelling buildings,” said Simon Williams, VP of product
management, business development and strategy for Redback
Networks. “As part of Ericsson, we also expect the SmartEdge 100
will be more extensively used by mobile operators, where
Internet access is delivered to mobile devices, not just
wireline PCs.”
SmartEdge MSERs offer a comprehensive range of advanced Ethernet
interfaces to enable the consolidation of the Ethernet
aggregation layer into the network edge. It supports the full
suite of Ethernet Switching and scaling protocols such as,
Q-n-Q, VPLS, H-VPLS. SmartEdge MSER delivers Advanced Traffic
Management with Hierarchical Quality of Service (H-QoS),
comprehensive traffic shaping and subscriber management, with
flexible assignment of control mechanisms, priorities and
services on a per-subscriber basis. Consequently, SmartEdge
MSERs can be directly connected to an access layer of the
network, such as a DSLAM, eliminating unnecessary network layers
and reducing complexity.
In conclusion, the SmartEdge 100 uses the same operating system
as Redback’s larger routers, and supports many of the same
network applications for data, voice and video services.
